Therapeutic Recreation

According to NCTRC, "Therapeutic Recreation is a systematic proces that utilizes recreation and other activity-based interventions to address the assessed needs of individuals with illnesses and/or disabling conditions, as a means to psychological and physical health, recovery and well-being. Recreational therapy includes, but is not limited to, providing treatment services and recreation activities to individuals using a variety of techniques including arts and crafts, animals, sports, games, dance and movement, drama, music, and community outings. Recreational therapists treat and help maintain the physical, mental, andemotional well-being of their clients by seeking to reduce depression, stress, and anxiety; recover basic motor functioning and reasoning abilities; buildconfidence; and socialize effectively."

Clubs

Clubs are free opportunities onsite that participants may sign up for via the Activities Newsletter sent each month. By determining the club one wishes to participate in for the month, they are able to work on improving knowledge of, rules, socialization with peers, and more with a group who also has similar interests. For example, card game club is a great option for those who want to learn how to play various games, the rules of the game, socializing with people in other groups, and learning how to respond appropriately to whether you win or not.

Programs

Therapeutic Recreation programs typically run for 4 to 6 weeks. Each session is designed to track participant progress in various areas related to the specific program. For example, in a Yoga program, we assess individuals on their balance, level of assistance needed, ability to follow the instructor, participation, adherence to safety guidelines, and interactions with peers. The goal of these programs isn’t to develop professional-level skills, but rather to enhance participants’ knowledge, personal growth, physical health, and social engagement with others.

Come Volunteer with us!

The Therapeutic Programs and Clubs are primarily staffed by our amazing volunteers and supervised by Rachel, our CTRS. The more volunteers we are able to have, the more clubs we are able to offer, as well as opening more spots in both clubs and programs. If you know anyone interested in volunteering for even just 2 hours a week please contact RachelHoferer@metzcor.com to get started in the volunteer process to open more spots.
